It’s a real pleasure to record a great band live in the studio… This week we’ve been busy tracking the inimitable Stephanie Carlin for her upcoming debut release. Her music is a thoughtful and unique blend of R&B, Soul, Jazz, Rock, Folk and Blues. The basics were tracked as a 5-piece for the most part, with the piano and drum set in our large live room (gotta love that bleed!), Steph in an iso booth and the bass and guitar amps isolated. The two songs that were tracked live as a 7-piece (with a saxophone and trumpet) were done with the horns in a separate iso booth, with line-of-sight to the rest of the band. Fortunately we have enough inputs and space to record all of this live with as much isolation as we want! and yes, the pianist is playing a steinway, our wurlitzer, *and* our rhodes.

Every once in a while we get to record a really great Steel player and Widgren is definitely one of those. This steel is a Mullen, built in Colorado. A beautifully machined instrument which really sounded great through our 1963 blackface Fender Showman amp through a 1961 slant-top Marshall cabinet.

Yesterday we had the pleasure to record a string section with (from left to right in the picture) Jenny Sheinman on Violin, Mazz Swift-Camlet on Viola, and Marika Hughes on Cello. If you don’t know who they are… look them up and hear for yourself. suffice to say it was an excellent string section. Since we added the extra iso booth and changed the shape of our live room, it sounds even better than it did for recording acoustic instruments like strings, horns and percussion.

Jenny Sheinman, Mazz Swift and Marika Hughes

Hoboken Recorders offers a kind of live room environment that most other studios in the NYC area can’t provide. Our 3,000 square foot main live room is comfortable and sounds incredible, but that’s only part of the story… There’s a smaller live room with a 6-foot wide glass door in full view of the large live room, an iso booth with full line of sight to the large live room — large enough to fit a drum kit or acoustic bass, and an anechoic vocal booth with a clear view into the small live room. In addition to these rooms, we also have three other isolated chambers that provide a wide variety of uses.

Because of the sheer volume of space at Hoboken Recorders, and the number of isolated rooms we have within eye shot of each other, we provide an extremely flexible recording environment in which we can have a great degree of isolation as well as clear line of sight for the whole band/ensemble. This allows you the kind of recording experience you could ordinarily only find in a studio further away from the city – but we’re only minutes from Manhattan and easily accessible by public transportation.

From the moment we entered Hoboken Recorders, we felt right at home. We are a 7 piece band including drums, bass, guitars, mandolin, banjo, accordion, violin and many vocals. Needless to say, this was not an easy group to work with. Alan and Pete were extremely professional and their studio is completely state of the art. They did a great job to get just the right sounds we were looking for.

Shores of America, the CD we did at Hoboken Recorders was named the Number 1 Irish Voice Album of the Year for 2008. We know that this was in part due to the time and energy that Hoboken Recorders put into our CD.

The studio is completely comfortable and located in the middle of Hoboken, close to public transportation. Working with Alan at Hoboken Recorders was one of the best experiences of my life! The studio has such a comfortable vibe that you feel like you’re not really working, just hanging and making music with great equipment to capture it!

Hoboken Recorders is a great place to record and I can’t wait to get back there again!

I have trustworthy and well-equipped ally that supports me in my effort to convert musical ideas into listenable reality. This alliance gives me access to technical expertise that I have never had the desire, patience or capacity to acquire, to wisdom in terms of arrangements and sound-crafting and to a pool of excellent musicians of every kind. I also receive honest support and constructive criticism that result in an end-product that surpasses what I could realize on my own.

What I am most interested in as a singer-composer is giving my musical ideas the best opportunity to find interested ears. This starts with having a quality product, and Hoboken Recorders absolutely share that same interest. Having such an ally is of inestimable value in today’s world, where the competition for ears is so accute.
